In the galleries: Trump in poncho and sombrero, Clinton as a suffragette

Thomas Nast might weep -- or laugh out loud. The great 19th-century political cartoonist could never have imagined a presidential campaign like the one that is, mercifully, about to end. But art must deal with the unimaginable, or at least try, so more than 40 painters, printmakers and graphic designers have addressed contemporary political issues in "Artists United!" The show, on display at the Busboys and Poets at Fifth and K streets NW, was organized by Charles Krause/Reporting Fine Art...

Take Part's review of "Social Justice: It happens to one it happens to all"

From graffiti on city streets to exhibits at major museums, artists have long depicted the fight for equal rights and freedom. Art can play a unique role in encouraging others to take action and in changing hearts and minds.

The message that injustice is rampant in American society is the theme of Social Justice: It Happens to One, It Happens to All, a new exhibit at Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art in Moraga, California, featuring 43 artists organized by curatorial team Gutfreund Cornett Art. The paintings, photographs, prints, and sculptures on display at the museum, which is about 20 miles east of San Francisco, address a range of issues, including race, migration, and gender inequality...

Huffington Post Review of "Social Justice: It happens to one it happens to all"

Some might say that the world is a mess right now. Others point out that it could be worse. In our war torn world, it depends on who you are and the place that you live. In light of the ever-growing list of crises crossing all borders and cultures, the curatorial partnership of Guttfreund Cornett Art has mobilized a group of 86 artists to address this escalation of violence, human rights violations, and environmental concerns. Throughout history, art has reflected its time. Art mirrors the aesthetic standard of the day and also provides a window into the historical context of the time. Works such as Andy Warhol’s, Big Electric Chair or Picasso’s Guernica serve as iconic reminders and powerful statements on social issues of their time. Artists often see their place to provoke, to voice, to enlighten. This long-standing role of the artist as activist is at the heart of “Social Change: It Happens to One, It Happens to All”, an art exhibition taking place at Saint Mary’s College of Art in Morago, CA September 18 - December 11, 2016...

Lamorinda Weekly Review of "Social Justice: It happens to one it happens to all"

Art has the power to amuse, anger, intrigue and inspire. It can bind a community together or divide it in two, serve as a catalyst for conversation or the impetus of a movement. Exhibitions don't make it into galleries simply by chance, but through careful curation and arduous selection.
This fall the Saint Mary's College Museum of Art - a local gem tucked in the back of SMC's campus - will simultaneously house two professionally-curated exhibitions, "The American Soldier" (open through Dec. 18) and "Social Justice: It Happens to One, It Happens to All" (open through Dec. 11), both of which were selected with a nod toward the upcoming election. The exhibitions will kick off on Sunday, Sept. 18 with an opening reception (see sidebar). Other curators and artists will also be present...

Marie Cameron Review of "Social Justice: It happens to one it happens to all"

The powerfully engaging internationally juried exhibition, Social Justice: It Happens to One It Happens to All, organized by Gutfreund Cornett Art opened Sunday at Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art with an inspiring Artist Talk in which 19 of the 46 exhibiting artists participated, some who traveled from as far away as San Diego and Los Angeles, Utah, Mexico and New Zealand!  It was very moving to learn what had compelled each artist to create their work and to listen to the types of reactions their work has received. Typically working with controversial, challenging and even disturbing subject matter, I found all these artists to be particularly brave, passionate, thoughtful, smart and deeply human. I can’t tell you how honored I am to have my work included with this company. This exhibition runs until December 11, 2016 in Moraga, California. Print and online catalogues are available at Gutfreund Cornet Art.

Mint Gallery: Where We Are Going, Where We Have Been

Atlanta, Georgia – MINT announces the selected artists included in their 3rd Annual National Juried Exhibition. Co-juried by Atlanta artists Micah and Whitney Stansell, Where We Are Going, Where We Have Been seeks to showcase the work of some of the most dynamic and innovative emerging cultural producers currently working in the United States. Out of over 250 emerging artists from all over the U.S. who submitted works (via our call for entry on CAFE), a total of 36 artists were chosen for the exhibition - from California, Georgia, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.

From the jurors “ We were overwhelmed with excitement from the response to the call for artists. We greatly enjoyed reading every artist statement and looking at each work, many times over. Making our final selections was extremely difficult.” One artist will also be selected for a solo exhibition to take place at MINT in 2017. Our jurors will also make this selection, and the announcement will take place at the opening reception on February 20th.

JUROR STATEMENT – The exhibition presents artists whose work conceptualizes a sense of beginning, origin, and family narratives. Responding to a specific place or time, these artists are informed by environment, history, and location. Through introspection and exploration, this exhibition captures ways of seeing and experiencing space, time, and the natural world.

Urban Riche Gallery Figurative Art Show Statement

Lucien Freud believed "If you are painting humans you’ve got the best subject matter in the world, and you can really do as much with them as they could do themselves. When I’m not painting them –- which is rare – I feel I’m being pretty frivolous.” From the earliest cave paintings dating back some 40,000 years, the figure has always been at the center of the art world. Maybe it is a sense of the relatable, a manifestation of the conscious self-awareness as we proceeded from pre-history to a mindset of self-reflection for the forms in which we inhabit. Using the figurative form, some artists explore a gateway to the human psyche, revealing emotion and energy while others may concede to leaving the intention a mystery. And as Freud believed, there are as many figurative forms as there are people willing to explore it.

Juror’s Statement Dualities Juried Photo Exhibition

Michelle and I very much enjoyed the opportunity to act as jurors for Smithtown Township ship Arts Council’s 34th Annual Juried Exhibition.  We chose the theme Dualities for this call because, as identical twins, this concept is always present in our daily life.  We find that photography allows us to use the camera as a tool for expressing this idea with few limitations.  Everyone who entered in the call was very insightful and imaginative in capturing this concept.  We viewed many works by artists that expressed dichotomy with complimentary placement in the images. What caught our attention was the diversity of imagery we viewed.

Our 1st and 2nd place selections are very opposite from one another in their process of conception, yet each exemplifies the theme.  The image titled Mermaidens by Alan Richards is a wonderful example of how one can create made-up, altered realities that have a sense of playfulness and displacement, allowing one to see many dualities.

Our 2nd place selection was the image titled But from what Sharing by Cyd Hamilton.  This photograph gives the sense that the camera and the photographer are simultaneously working together in a dual creative process, as she uses a Holga camera. This image provides an eloquent blend of sequences happening.

Special thanks to all of the participating artists for giving us the opportunity to view works by emerging and established artists. We were excited to learn more about them!
