Lucien Freud believed "If you are painting humans you’ve got the best subject matter in the world, and you can really do as much with them as they could do themselves. When I’m not painting them –- which is rare – I feel I’m being pretty frivolous.” From the earliest cave paintings dating back some 40,000 years, the figure has always been at the center of the art world. Maybe it is a sense of the relatable, a manifestation of the conscious self-awareness as we proceeded from pre-history to a mindset of self-reflection for the forms in which we inhabit. Using the figurative form, some artists explore a gateway to the human psyche, revealing emotion and energy while others may concede to leaving the intention a mystery. And as Freud believed, there are as many figurative forms as there are people willing to explore it.
